‘Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think’ (Albert Einstein)
To keep our mind and body active, motivated and strong; education is the most effective way to train ourselves in achieving the mindset we seek. Thus, Islamic education also trains our mind to live our life in a way that is pleasing to our creator yet always of benefit to others around us too.
The beauty of studying Islam
Islam is such a religion, the more you learn, the more infatuated you become by it. We often become so amazed by what we learn, we cannot help but share it to others. How many of us have learnt something new about Islam via another fellow friend or family? This is why the weight of studying Islam and spreading it to others is so lofty, it continues to add to one’s good deeds even after they pass away. It becomes your benefiting contribution in the life of others and for yourself.
The Messenger Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“O people, knowledge only comes by learning and seeking understanding. For whomever (God) Allah intends good, he gives him understanding of the religion. “ (al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr)
Studying Islam is made up of two core actions, seeking to understand and practise.
Being a Muslim is part of our identity but how many of have truly studied our faith? Do we know the history behind Islam or the reason as to why we pray 5 times a day?
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, once advised:
‘Say: “I believe in Allah” and then remain steadfast.’ (Sahih Muslim)
This highlights the importance of believing in Allah but also remaining firm on the teachings of Islam. It is not enough for us to just believe but we most also support by making it part of our daily lifestyle.
Our religion teaches us a wide variety, from directions on how to remain clean, to the manner we should adopt when we speak to others and the history of our predecessors, it teaches us the way to live our life. When we study the reasons as to why Allah has prescribed certain actions or the wisdom behind them, our hearts incline towards completing them in a more sincere manner.
The link between studying Islam and the purpose of it
Muslims we believe the importance that this life is temporary. That our life truly begins in the next life. The duration spent in this life should be used as a means to perfect ourselves as good and obedient individuals. Everything that we have been blessed with comes from Allah. The time spent in this world is the only way we can prepare our provisions for the next life that is for eternity.
Just as we would secure our belongings if we were to move homes, we believe this world and the next are of the same. The only provisions we will be able to take with us is our a’amaal (actions), how we treated others but also what we gained for ourselves.
Are there any virtues for studying Islam?
The virtues of studying Islam are so great that Allah has shown an infinite amount of mercy on those on this journey. As it is mentioned by a companion:
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise.” (Sahih Muslim)
This teaching (hadith) gathers that Allah recognises the effort we make to study our religion as it is done so to become closer to him. The path taken to learn Islam may seem difficult at first, but Allah is so merciful, in exchange he has eased our path to paradise (Jannah).
